The Home Builders Blitz 2014 is a nationwide event through Habitat for Humanity International in which homes are built start to finish in a week by professional home builders. Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East is excited to be building four homes from May 30-June 13 in the Centennial neighborhood in east Portland. Fish Construction NW, Neil Kelly/Parr Lumber, Noyes Development Co and Schumacher Custom Homes —and their subcontractors are donating labor and materials to get these homes built in two weeks! The event culminates on Friday, June 13 at noon when families will receive keys to their new homes at the Home Dedication Ceremony.
The families receiving these homes have already put in 500 hours of sweat equity and will purchase the homes at cost and pay a 0%-interest mortgage. The Home Builders Blitz was started in 2002 by Tom Gipson, a professional home builder in Raleigh, N.C., who supported Habitat for Humanity’s efforts to eliminate poverty housing in his community.
Gipson rallied other local builders for an accelerated build, which was so successful that Habitat for Humanity International decided to promote it as a nationwide event.
